What influenced the writing of The Boston Slasher?I've included this page to help writers and readers alike discover some of the influences we writers draw on when we watch movies and read books. A good female terminator in The Sarah Connor Chronicles provides inspiration for a totally different character in a book. It's not as if we copy what others have done, the trick for a writer is to take the essential ingredients of that character and use them to create their own character. I've outlined a few below. The writing of The Boston Slasher was inspired by movies such as Silence of the Lambs, I really liked the character Clarice, that movie was the first time I saw a woman take on a role usually played by men. It seems the big Hollywood studios had finally recognised that half the audience members watching their movies were actually women? It was the character played by Jodie Foster who provided much of the inspiration for Lisa Callaghan. Seven played a minor role although I wanted to avoid the oppressive darkness of Seven. Another movie that helped shape the book was 28 Days with Sandra Bullock, I liked the focus on recovery and it avoided many of the stereotypes of recovery type movies. A Time To Kill, also with Sandra Bullock was a movie that helped provide inspiration for Luke Farmer, he's a character who's been scarred by the black/white divide and now that he's living in the north he's fighting the poor Southern boy stereotype. Cheers, Alastair
